One of a handful of wicketkeepers tried by England in their quest for a long-term replacement for Alec Stewart, Matt Prior has always relied on his batting as his main attribute. He was in the England One Day set-up as a specialist batsman before receiving his Test debut in May 2007 against West Indies at Lord's and a ton in that match - the first English keeper to score a debut century - suggested the troublesome position had been filled.
However, Prior's batting faded later in the summer against India and a succession of costly mistakes behind the stumps saw him axed after 10 Tests, despite the recovery of his batting form in Sri Lanka in December 2007.
Prior started the 2008 county season in sizzling batting form and the torrid time experienced by England replacement Tim Ambrose saw him recalled to the national squad for all formats by the end of the season. Prior had cemented his place in the lower-middle order in both the Test side and ODI teams, but the arrival of Craig Kieswetter on the England scene in 2010 has left him on the sidelines in the shorter format of the game. He will need to harness an attacking instinct that results in too many loose dismissals and maintain improved glovework if he is to hang on to his place in the Test side.
