Mitchell Johnson is a languid left armer with a distinctive style that adds variety to the Australian attack. He possesses the classic left armer's weapon of inswing to right handed batsmen and can be genuinely sharp. He took some time to settle in Test cricket but was an immediate hit in ODIs, combining wicket-taking ability with nagging accuracy. Johnson made his Test breakthrough in 2008/09, becoming leader of the attack and revealing an ability for clean hitting that suggests he could become a genuine allrounder.
Johnson started the 2009 Ashes series as the third highest ranked bowler in Test cricket thanks to his superb displays against South Africa in the preceding months, but faced the first crisis of his career early on against England as his form seemed to desert him. His radar returned at Headingley where he took five for 69 and he ended 2009 being named ICC Cricketer of the Year.
